The old town tells a story...
From the characteristic alleyways to historical buildings

The historical centre of Irsina, destroyed in 988 by the Saracens, was rebuilt by the Lombard Prince John II of Salerno who fortified the town with external walls, watchtowers and the Cathedral.
The ancient origins of the buildings can be clearly seen, in their form and structure, when walking through the narrow alleyways in the areas Casale and Greci.
In the 16th century, as local families found wealth and a middle class society developed, the first stately buildings appeared on the road that reaches the town gate Maggiore, today known as Saint Eufemia.
In the following centuries Irsina was enriched with additional buildings, both civil and religious, giving a charming and aristocratic air to the town. The many small churches scattered around the historic centre are also testimony to the age-old power of the town, and that of the diocese, through the centuries.
